Segregation impacts lives, energy, toxicity & more. The better you segregate, the more equitable and healthy society can become. We cannot stress enough how important it is. Teach your family & children to segregate even if your city does not insist (yet).
Kabadiwalas have been an integral part of our society since ages. They come and collect newspapers, old magazines, cartons, glass, various kinds of metals & plastics. Better the condition of the used product, higher is the reselling value.
Hence, wash off all the soiled particles from the packet/container & collect it for a sufficient period of time to sell it to the kabadiwala/ authorised dealer in your city.
Collect, sell & promote recycling
Hazardous waste
E-waste. Batteries, bulbs, paints, old medicines, injections
Keep all your electronics waste & medical waste, paints & industrial waste separate. Only give to the authorised dealer nearby. These wastes when mixed & thrown in the landfill results in poisoning the groundwater. Dispose off these wastes safely.
Safely handover to the authorized dealer
Rejects
Sanitary waste, Chips packets(multilayered plastics), pet waste, & miscellaneous
Once you start segregating, you realise only 10% of your total waste is actually to be thrown away. This waste is only to be landfilled amongst all the various kinds of waste that we mix together.
Wrap this waste in a newspaper & handover to the garbage collector
This chart is based on first hand research into the types of waste generated in a typical Indian home. We found that 60% – 80% is organic waste, 20% is recyclable, 10% is toxic and 10% is reject waste that has to go to a landfill site or be incinerated. Good waste management means throwing only 10%, once in a few days!
